The CEO of Whole Foods doesn’t think highly processed plant-based meats are good for us.

“I don’t think eating highly processed foods is healthy,” said Whole Foods CEO John Mackey to CNBC. “I think people thrive on eating whole foods.”

Mackey’s concerns fall in line with statements made by dieticians and nutrition specialists in recent weeks about the new dietary trend. When asked by Business Insider what they thought of plant-based meats, dieticians classified the food as a “sometimes” item, meaning it can be healthy in moderation.

Beyond Meat’s plant-based burgers are not less fatty or caloric than real meat burgers. However, dieticians do praise the Beyond Burger for containing two grams of fiber and the same amount of protein as their meat counterpart. And when compared to the competitor’s Impossible Burger, dieticians agree Beyond Burger’s protein sources are the healthier choice.

One of the most popular plant-based meat companies, Beyond Meat, was popularized by Whole Foods in 2013 through their vegan chicken strips.

Now, Beyond Meats is expected to be on the menu of 11 chain restaurants. Beyond Meat made its fast-food debut at Carl’s Jr. this year, with companies Burger King, Del Taco, Dunkin’ and Subway – to name a few – following shortly behind. The feedback has been promising, with Carl’s Jr. announcing an expansion of its partnership with Beyond Meat earlier this week.

Beyond Meat’s stock price has risen more than 500 percent since the company’s public offering in May, the Insider reports. Their success is in no small part related to Whole Foods, which has been a launching pad for almost all of Beyond Meats products, according to Mackey.

This means that Mackey’s company is partly responsible for popularizing a booming food trend that Mackey doesn’t think is healthy for the public.
