In the current social climate, almost everyone has some sort of social media, but how many people really care or notice their online privacy levels? We’ve all become accustomed to posting anything online. It’s more of a rarity if you’re “off the grid.” Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, is concerned with Facebook’s carelessness with people’s privacy.

Wozniak publicly left Facebook and urges users to do the same. He posted a status explaining why before he deleted his account in 2018, according to USA today he posted, “I am in the process of leaving Facebook. It’s brought me more negatives than positives. Apple has more secure ways to share things about yourself. I can still deal with old school email and text messages.” According to Fox News, he deleted his Facebook after the news of Cambridge Analytica data scandal became public. Millions of Facebook users’ information was being improperly used by the data company.

“But, everything about you… I mean, they can measure your heartbeat with lasers now, they can listen to you with a lot of devices. Who knows if my cellphone’s listening right now? Alexa has already been in the news a lot.” Wozniak said to a TMZ reporter, “So I worry because you’re having conversations that you think are private… You’re saying words that really shouldn’t be listened to, because you don’t expect it. But there’s almost no way to stop it.”

So, what happened when your privacy was breached via Cambridge Analytica and Facebook?

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, with every like, share, status and message you have sent it gave Cambridge Analytica enough information to accurately depict what kind of person you are. It used 5 broad personality traits; openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. When the data was put together, those traits helped put people into specific personality types. With that information, Facebook was able to personalize Donald Trump’s pledges towards the different personality types in advertisements. Cambridge Analytica claims that the data and research it gave to Facebook helped win the election for Trump.

“If you post something and I like it… the trouble is my likes not going to you, in my head it is, but my like is going to the advertisers.” Wozniak said to TMZ.
