Dalai-lama drama! In a recent interview with the BBC, the Dalai Lama stated, “if a female Dalai Lama comes, she should be more attractive.” The statement has caused an uproar to many media outlets around the world, causing the Dalai Lama to leave a statement in response to the backlash.

The statement posted on his website acknowledged that it caused backlash as it states, “His Holiness genuinely meant no offense. He is deeply sorry that people have been hurt by what he said and offers his sincere apologies, his Holiness consistently emphasizes the need for people to connect with each other on a deeper human level, rather than getting caught up in preconceptions based on superficial appearances.”

The spiritual leader, who is now 86 years old, is the most important person on earth to all Buddhists, and while Buddhism embraces both inner and outer beauty, the spokesperson for the leader insists that his comment was “misinterpreted” and added, “His Holiness has opposed the objectification of women, has supported women and their rights and celebrated the growing international consensus in support of gender equality and respect for women,” the statement said. “His Holiness has frequently suggested that if we had more women leaders, the world would be a more peaceful place.”
