If you’re planning on traveling to Italy anytime soon, there’s a new rule you should know. Florence is banning tourists from eating on its sidewalks and stair steps. This is due to overcrowding, picnicking, and people leaving their garbage…Mama mia!

Florence’s mayor Dario Nardella stated via the city’s Facebook group, “Sometimes we are faced with tourists who lack education towards our city […]. And that’s not good at all. Tourists, if they behave like they do at home, are and will always be our welcome guests, especially if they want to enjoy our gastronomic specialties […]. Only those who love Florence deserve Florence.”

The announcement of charging up to $581 dollars per fine, received a bit of backlash from many Italians who requested that local authorities offer more trash cans and benches for people to sit and to be able to throw away their garbage.

CNN reports that Florence has 10.2 million tourists visits per year, and the number has continued to increase. The four streets who will be affected by the ban and who will face restrictions are, Via de’ Neri, Piazzale degli Uffizi, Piazza del Grano and Via della Ninna, as they are the most popular and have many shops and restaurants.

The president of the Via de’Neri committee served as the spokesperson for the local response, as she told the local newspaper La Nazione that the group was, “satisfied that the City has accepted our requests and we hope the new law will restore a little decorum on our street.”

The new law will take effect starting September 4th.
