White Meat or Red Meat Makes No Difference, Says Your Cholesterol

You might be feeling double crossed by the chicken, since you were thought to believe it was healthy, but a new study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that eating white meat or red meat makes no difference, as both have the same effect on your cholesterol levels.

The University of California San Francisco conducted a study where participants between the ages of 21 and 65 went on a red meat (beef), white meat(chicken), and plant-based diet which lasted four weeks each, with break periods where participants would eat their normal food. The participants’ blood was drawn before and after the diets and the results showed that the plant-based diet provided the healthiest impact to your cholesterol, however the effects of the red meat and white meat were identical. “Participants eating a diet high in saturated fats had higher total and LDL cholesterol levels than those assigned to a diet low in saturated fat — no matter their source of protein,” explained CNN.

The research also provided new knowledge when it comes to the hardening of the arteries called atherosclerosis. CNN reports that the recent research suggests both small and large bad cholesterol particles are associated with hardening of the arteries, which means there is no difference in what kind of meat is being consumed, even if white meat is considered a small particle, it hardens and effects your cholesterol negatively the same way.
