It appears buying Instagram was the smartest thing CEO Mark Zuckerberg has ever done, as Instagram’s popularity is passing over Facebook’s, according to the eMarketer report.

The analytics showcased by the New York Post, illustrates that people’s average time on Facebook is only 38 minutes, whereas the previous year, it was 41 minutes, and experts suspects the decline to continue. Not counting the time spent on the app, the company continues to grow outside the U.S with a growth of 55 million active users making 2.38 billion people monthly active Facebook users as of April 2019.

Instagram is trending upward, with the app accounting for $14.9 billion in advertising revenue for Facebook in the first quarter of the year, experts assume that this will continue to be the case.

eMarketer’s principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson sheds light on the findings, speaking to the New York Post, “Facebook’s continued loss of younger adult users, along with its focus on downranking clickbait posts and videos in favor of those that create ‘time well spent,’ resulted in less daily time spent on the platform in 2018 than we had previously expected.” “Less time spent on Facebook translates into fewer chances for marketers to reach the network’s users,” she says.

Williamson is basing her stance on previous reports, including one from the Pew Research Center done in September 2018, showcasing that 42% of Americans are taking more breaks from social media, and 26% are going as far as deleting the Facebook app from their phone.

It all comes down to preference and the way people like to engage and interact on social media. Whether you prefer Instagram or Facebook, the two together provide an unbeatable social media standing.
