The world-famous luxury fashion house, Gucci is making headlines yet again for its controversial stance in its newly launched cruise collection by embracing feminism around the globe. Gucci had models wearing a jacket emblazoned with the pro-choice, phrase, “My Body My Choice.”

Alessandro Michele is the creative fashion director of the brand and is often responsible for making headlines for its controversial fashion statements. He recently spoke to the New York Post stating, “Other pieces in the collection were adorned with “194” and the date May 22, 1978, which Michele told WWD refers to law number 194, which established abortion as legal in Italy, and the date that it was passed.”

Michele however, seems to be unfazed by the constant controversy, telling the New York Post, “It’s unbelievable that around the world there are still people who believe that they can control a woman’s body, a woman’s choice, I will always stand behind the freedom of being, always.”

The brand has faced many backlashes for different political representations portrayed by the powerhouse, most notably “blackface turtleneck,” an $800 turban and even pricier “dirty” sneakers. The brand has also an organization founded in 2013 that works on philanthropic work within the field of gender equality.

Recently, the brand has also founded an advisory council on diversity, to ensure that pieces that are too racy never make it to the sales floor. It’s safe to assume though, that even with a team trying to tame Michele, nothing will get in the way of his creative expression, leaving people around the world to either root for the fashion statements, or hoping this trend will pass.
