For centuries, famous poets have used flowers as a metaphor of life. William Blake once said we should see “a heaven in a wildflower,” interpreted by some as seeing new things/instances that are beyond your control as an adventure, and in turn, become a positive obstacle. It seems as though this notion is for a valid reason, as new research by The American Society of Horticulture Science, indicates that having flowers in your home can have a positive effect on your health.

To see a pretty looking, scent-enriching, vivid, eye-catching flower with its delicate petals and colorful tones, as a remedy, is an interesting notion. The American Society of Horticulture Science has provided research based on ninety surgical patients in which half had flowers in their rooms while the other half didn’t. The findings were shocking, as they indicated that those patients who had flowers “had lower blood pressure and heart rate, lower ratings of pain, anxiety, and fatigue, and more positive feelings and higher satisfaction about their rooms than the patients without foliage.” The findings go on to suggest flowers should be, “complimentary medicine” for patients.

Complimentary Therapies In Medicine also did research which seems to further the previous findings. The research left a vase of flowers in various women’s college dorms, and the result found that the women felt more relaxed and stress-free.

So whether you like roses, sunflowers or lilies, the next time you think of buying flowers to decorate your home, you will most likely think of the health benefits you are offering to yourself, or you might just use the health benefits as an excuse to spend money on flowers, or you might (flower God forbid) be allergic to flowers, whatever the case, flowers are not only for scentiments, experts say they are for healing.
