The airport transit has many tourists impatiently in motion to pass through TSA security. And while TSA officials suggest putting your pocket items inside the carry-on bag when passing through the motion detectors, many people are forgetting, and some are purposely leaving their change in the security bins.

It may seem as though cumulatively the entire nation has contributed to the unexpected allowance for TSA officials, which has been close to $1 million dollars a year. LAX and JFK top the rankings, with JFK Airport being number one with $72,392 in change. The second is LAX Airport with $71,748 in change.

According to the TSA officials, every fund is documented, reported, then deposited into a special account after officials try their best to return the funds to the passengers. Officials state that the cause of this constant forgetting can be due to different factors, the most common of them being that the passengers are easily distracted by the advertisements at the bottom of the bin, rushing to put their shoes on, and put their electronic devices back in their carry-on, ultimately forgetting to get their change. And it’s not just change people are leaving behind, apparently some people forget large bills in wallets left behind.

One can say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure in this case, and from the looks of it, things are not bound to change any time soon, as the Record passenger volume at the Port Authority’s metro area airports in 2018 into 2019 have only increased, and this summer officials are expecting another busy travel season.
