Picture this: You getting all ready for your upcoming trip, getting into the cab and arriving at the airport with your passport at hand excited to embark on THAT trip you have been long waiting for… but you arrive at your gate after going through security at the airport, only to find that your flight is overbooked and after you went through all the preparation for this trip (called your bank to say you’ll be out of town, went to the store to buy travel size shampoo, did laundry so you wouldn’t have to do it when you arrived back from your trip, put gas in your car for the same reason, bought extra clothes, left your dog at daycare, the list is endless..) you now have to book another flight.

Well, if you are a customer of Delta, United, or American Airlines, by utilizing the American Airlines app, you can now know if your flight is overbooked, and if you volunteer to change your flight, you will receive a compensation/voucher from the airline.

Some will say that this is simply too good to be true, given the fact that this still requires you to be at the airport to go forward with the process (the rebooking, the confirmation, and the compensation must be done at the gate), others will say that it really makes no difference, as they have the hotel already booked and it will cost a fortune to change the dates, but if you are a customer who likes a good deal, and who doesn’t mind changing your plans a little, it can compensate.

According to a recent passenger report done by The Points Guy, a passenger from American Airlines began to do the check-in process through the app of his international flight and claims that he received $200 to switch to one of the four alternative itineraries the airline offered after he was informed his flight was overbooked. He states that he received his voucher “Within a minute of being confirmed on the new flight.” The airline informs its passengers however, that the itineraries are subject to change, and are not guaranteed to be for the same days.

For flexible travelers, this alternative seems to present great benefit, as it can in some cases extend your trip, and maybe offer the opportunity to go out for a nice dinner or a cool excursion during your trip with the extra money provided by the airline. But for the not so flexible traveler, the chances of your trip being cut for even a day, having to change their hotel dates, along with the possibility of staying overnight at the airport could be a priceless inconvenience.
