Harriet Tubman’s historical face was supposed to be printed on the $20 bill in the year 2020. This was a plan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of woman’s right to vote, according to NBC News. However, it seems plans have changed.

This redesign is no longer happening until 2028 and many are left wondering why.

According to NBC News, Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary stated in a hearing at the House Financial Services Committee that, “The primary reason we have looked at redesigning the currency is for counterfeiting issues.”

Mnuchin continues “Based upon this, the $20 bill will now not come out until 2028. The $10 bill and the $50 bill will come out with new features beforehand.”

After a 10-month process of collecting input from the public, the Harriet Tubman design was announced in 2016 by the former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew.

Jack Lew said in 2016 that the decision to put Tubman on the $20 was “driven by thousands of responses we received from Americans young and old.” He also commented on his surprise of the response received by children, saying, “I have been particularly struck by the many comments and reactions from children for whom Harriet Tubman is not just a historical figure, but a role model for leadership and participation in our democracy.”

According to NBC News, before President Trump was elected, he said that the choice decision to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill was “pure political correctness.” He then proposed placing her portrait on the $2 bill instead. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has introduced a bill earlier in the year to have the Treasury print Tubman on the $20 bill in 2021.
