President Trump recently appeared on Steve Hilton’s Fox News show. According to Vox, he gave an inside perspective on how lawmaking is supposed to work, saying,

“We’re changing laws as rapidly as we can get through the courts.” According to Vox, Congress is the one who changes laws and the courts are the interpreters. They also stated that this “trend” of cutting out the middle man (the executive branch) didn’t just start with Trump. Back in 2012, President Obama used executive action to create the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

According to Vox, Trump’s comment about changing laws is regarding the immigration plan that he spoke about at the White House. The immigration plan is still not clear and the main proposal is to restrict legal immigration. According to Vox, the proposal also would require immigrants to have a level of proficiency in English. While one option is to negotiate with Democrats, President Trump is using emergency declarations and executive orders. Recently, Trump was presented with legal issues in a courtroom in California based on his emergency declaration about building the border wall.

In the interview, Hilton asked about the infrastructure bill. According to Vox, Trump responded that he wants to do one and is unwilling to compromise.

“I also think we’re being played by the Democrats a little bit, I think what they want me to do is say, ‘Well we’ll raise taxes, or we’ll do this or this, and then they’ll have a news conference, ‘See Trump wants to raise taxes’ So it’s a little bit of a game.”

Vox states that Trump is not lying when he says that he’s changing laws as quickly as courts will let him. They also state that Trump is giving up on negotiating with Democrats and he isn’t letting Congress oversee his administration. Trump is also not allowing any of his former aids testify and isn’t complying with subpoenas from the House Democrats.

The House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler is calling the situation a “constitutional crisis” since the president is “disobeying the law” and is “refusing all information to Congress.”

According to Vox, Democrats are considering new and untested options in hopes of forcing the White House to submit to lawmakers and conduct in lawful oversight.
