Fresh off of winning the prestigious green jacket from The Masters, Tiger Woods is in line to receive another admired honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Trump tweeted within 24 hours of Woods’ historic win writing:

“Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!”

The award is regarded as the nation’s highest civilian honor and is given to someone who has made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

Whether that defines Tiger Woods is up for debate, but the 43-year-old recently gave us one of the greatest comeback stories in sports. Up until 2008, Woods was on top of the world. He was at his peak, dominating the competition like a machine. But the brakes came off as his off-the-course mistakes came to light and derailed his career, reminding us that this deity-like figure was only a human.

Then injuries plagued him and threatened his career. Woods suffered multiple neck issues, Achilles injuries, knee problems, along with four back procedures. It affected his play, as he ranked lower than 800th in the world at one point, and almost became irrelevant.

But things got even worse as the last back procedure he had was a spinal fusion surgery in 2017. It was as serious as it gets and was the last resort for his chronic back problems. But, if it didn’t work, then there would be no hope for him. And even though the surgery was a success regarding the pain, it would restrict the movement in his back, which is nonideal for a golfer.

Mentally and physically, it appeared Tiger Woods was finally broken and hit rock-bottom. He had a DUI in 2017. He admitted to not expecting ever to pick up a club again, let along winning another major championship. He even had to crawl onto the floor and lie on his stomach just to play with his children.

He was at a low point in his life in 2017 and dug himself a hole no one expected him to climb out of. But, like a Phoenix, Woods was born again, after his career appeared to be dead, and proved nearly everyone in the world wrong by winning one of the most prestigious events in sports.

The Masters’ win was his fifth overall and 15th major win, both placing him second all-time. And at the age of 43, he became the second-oldest Masters’ winner. In all categories, he trails only the legendary Jack Nicklaus.

Woods will be the eighth person and fourth athlete President Trump has awarded the medal to
