The “St. Louis style” bagel has caused a major ruckus.

According to Mashable, the “St. Louis style” bagel (being a bagel that has been cut into “thin slices like a loaf of bread”) has Twitter users officially freaking out.

Mashable gives the low-down on just how offended the world is over the disgraceful act of slicing bagels like a loaf of bread and then serving them: “After the initial anger over the travesty that is sliced bagels passed, ‘St. Louis style’ became a meme. People shared messed-up ways to consume their favorite foods — from delicately sipping coffee through a soaked napkin to feasting on boiled pizza.”

One person even tweeted a meal of “steak and bananas” featuring ketchup on top with a glass of milk on the side. Another tweeted a picture of “St. Louis style strawberry milk” that displayed a bottle of ketchup being poured into a glass of milk. There was even a picture of Colgate toothpaste being spread onto a piece of bread to prove just how messed-up and wrong Twitter users think “St. Louis style” bagel slicing is.

The bagels appeared to have been a product provided by Panera Bread. Mashable says, “It should be noted that the bread-slicing practice does have a few supporters — including, apparently, half the team at Panera HQ. It’s true, we suppose, that if you’re looking for a high toppings-to-bagel ratio, a thin bagel ‘toast’ would provide the base on which to fulfill your sick dreams.”

A progressive weekly newspaper in St. Louis, The Riverfront Times, even admits to St. Louis dining style being absolutely weird saying, “If we have any talent here in the Lou, it’s that we can take any good food and ruin it,” referring to the bagel disaster.  “There’s the St. Paul sandwich, a regional favorite. It’s an egg foo young patty and some pickles and mayonnaise stuffed inside two slices of white bread. And some of our old-timers even eat brain sandwiches. That’s cow brains, cut into thick slices, fried and stuffed between bread. The texture is said to be like that of a spongy McDonald’s hash brown. We’re practically zombies.”

No wonder the Twitter universe chose “St. Louis style” as the ultimate adjective to describe how bizarre (or down right wicked) they feel that vertically slicing bagels is.
