The last two Olympic games (Summer 2016 and Winter 2018) didn’t draw as much attention, accumulating among the lowest ratings on record for the event. So, in an effort to juice things up and draw in more eyes, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has proposed including four new functions to the 2024 summer Paris Games.

The newest proposal would add breakdancing, surfing, sport climbing, and skateboarding to the games to help “connect with the young generation.”

“We are pleased to see that Paris 2024’s proposal for new sports to the Olympic programme is very much in line with the reforms of Olympic Agenda 2020, which is striving to make the Olympic programme gender-balanced, more youth-focused and more urban,” an IOC statement read.

“These four sports also offer the opportunity to connect with the young generation,” President of IOC, Thomas Bach, said.

Technically, breakdancing will be the only new one in 2024 because the other three are already etched in for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games. However, they are not confirmed for anything beyond.

Successful or not, bringing in these four games will put a further spotlight on the judges because of the extremely subjective nature of these events. It will essentially be judged based on how the judges feel the performances should be performed over anything else.

But the committee will use Tokyo to assess how surfing, sport climbing, and skateboarding are managed, judged, and evaluate the integrity of the competitions before finalizing anything for Paris.

Breakdancing debuted in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and has only grown since, especially in France, who own the second-largest group of participants in breakdancing behind only the United States.

“Urban sport, universal and popular with more than one million B-Boys and B-Girls in France, we propose to bring breakdance and its famous battles to the games,” read a tweet from Paris 2024.

And including breakdancing would fit right in with the new structure that “allows host cities to propose events to be included in their iteration of the Olympics, namely those sports that are popular in that country but not represented at the Games.”

The committee’s executive board will meet this summer to discuss, but a decision is not required until December of 2020. You can read more about this story on Bleacher Report.
