The Colin Kaepernick controversy has ended, at least temporarily, as the NFL agreed to a financial settlement with the quarterback and safety Eric Reid in their collusion case.

The entire saga began back in 2016 when Kaepernick went from star quarterback to ‘former’ star QB and arguably the most controversial sports figure in recent memory (and perhaps ever) by kneeling for the national anthem to bring awareness to social injustices.

He then parted ways with the 49ers after the 2016 season and has remained unsigned since, even though there have been teams with gaping holes at the quarterback position. But no one bit, although a couple of teams came close.

Eric Reid was the first player to kneel alongside Kaepernick when they were teammates in San Francisco and stood by Kaepernick since, which is why he believed he remained unsigned.

However, he wasn’t jobless as long as Kaepernick was, playing the 2017 season and signing with the Carolina Panthers last September before going on to play 13 games in 2018 and landing a three-year deal to stay in Carolina. A deal he believed helped their collusion case.

Before the settlement, Reid said, “If anything, it proves my point from last year. I didn’t sign until a [few weeks into] the regular season. This year I signed a more substantial contract over the same time period. I’m the same player.”

And since that quote, he and Kaepernick settled for an undisclosed amount which is believed to be less than $10 million, although it’s likely we’ll never find out how much.

“For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL. As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement, so there will be no further comment by any party.

But if it’s less than $10 million total, it’s a bit of a surprise because it does not feel like the win many expected Kaepernick had scored and takes away the stigma of a loss on the part of the NFL.

Initially, the belief was that Kaepernick had a smoking gun on the NFL which checkmated them into a lucrative deal and indirectly showed their guilt. But $10 million is nothing to the NFL, which makes nearly $15 billion in revenues each year, and seems a lot less than what many anticipated the two players would get.

It feels more like the NFL wanted this distraction to go away more than anything so wrote them a check. A price tag that shows maybe there wasn’t as much of a case against them as initially thought.

And the settlement number is less than the $20 million minimum he reportedly wanted to get him to play in the new startup American Allegiance of Football. You can read more about this story on Bleacher Report.
