It’s the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism’s (GIFCT) duty to keep disturbing videos of terrorist attacks away from social media, and apparently someone dropped the ball.

Rep. Bennie GThompsonChairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, wrote a letter to the CEOs of the four major social media platforms, asking how the video of the New Zealand mosque shooting made it onto their websites, according to CNBC.

The CEOs of Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and Google’s YouTube were all addressed in Thompson’s letter.

“You must do better,” he wrote. “It is clear from the recent pattern of horrific mass violence and thwarted attempts at mass violence – here and abroad – that this is not merely an American issue but a global one.

“Your companies must prioritize responding to these toxic and violent ideologies with resources and attention. If you are willing to do so, Congress must consider policies to ensure that terrorist content is not distributed on your platforms – including studying the examples being set by other countries.”

According to CNBC, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms rushed to remove copied versions of the video that kept showing up. In the 24 hours after the shooter live-streamed the attack, Facebook removed 1.5 million videos of the event. Apparently 1.2 million of those videos were blocked before they went live. But, the video was viewed 4,000 times before Facebook managed to remove it.

We can only hope that the GIFCT will prevent this from ever happening again.
