Could there be a tangible solution to the world’s growing demand for food.

According to the New York Post, Israel is working on developing lab-grown meat, also known as “clean meat,” cultured meat or in-vitro. Pretty wild.

What’s it made of? New York Post reports that this new “clean meat” is “basically made of animal muscle cells grown in a culture in a lab, a technology similar to stem cells.”

Bioengineering professor at Hebrew University and founder of Future Meat Technologies Yaakov Nahmias said, “Producing meat is very inefficient.” He added that cultured meat uses “10 times less water, less land, less energy than the current meat production.”

Is it tasty? Well, according to advocates, the lab-grown substitute is flavorsome and also better for the environment, per the New York Post.

Alex Shirazi, co-founder of the “Cultured Meat and Future Food” podcast and a founder of the Cultured Meat Symposium, claims that Israel is on a fast track of being “the leader in the space, or (is) side-by-side with Silicon Valley.” The majority of other companies have only been successful in producing what the New York Post calls “fleshy granules.”

The first burger to be “grown” in a lab was produced in 2013 by a Dutch company and cost over $300,000, per the New York Post. (McDonald’s dollar menu, anyone?) Nonetheless, costs have gone down. “Last year, US-based Memphis Meats’ ground beef alternative was reported to cost about $2,400 per pound. Each slice of Aleph Farms’ ‘steak’ costs about $50 to produce,” the New York Post reports.
