A day after announcing his 2020 campaign run, Bernie Sanders announced he intended to sign a pledge confirming that he would run as a Democrat, according to CNN. The Senator of Vermont is an independent who identifies as a Democratic socialist, and his refusal to officially embrace the Democratic party has not sat particularly well with some Democrats.

Last fall, the Democratic National Committee met and agreed that it would be mandatory “to affirm in writing” that those seeking the party’s nomination “are a member of the Democratic Party, will accept the Democratic nomination” and “will run and serve as a member of the Democratic Party.” And despite the criticism received from the party, the 77-year-old has decided to enter the 2020 race. According to CNN, Democrats Sen. Pat Leahy and Rep. Pete Welch have endorsed him. Sanders is hoping to triumph after a failed 2016 bid, where he was ultimately trounced by Clinton.

Per Politico, the University of New Hampshire’s Granite State Poll showed Sanders as the leading Democratic nominee in New Hampshire; 26 percent of Democratic primary voters support Sanders when given a list of candidates. But when asked an open-ended question, 28 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for Sanders. (The reason this survey has some significance is that New Hampshire, along with Iowa, is regarded as a state you must win if you want to earn your party’s nomination.)

In spite of being an independent, Sanders may be the most appealing to the Democratic base of voters because of his socialistic views, which have made him a front-runner alongside Kamala Harris and Joe Biden (if he were to declare).
