The symbolic Doomsday Clock is frozen at two minutes to the metaphorical midnight of global disaster, per BBC. The clock was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) in 1947 and aims to warn of impending doom brought on by threats such as nuclear weapons and climate change. It was originally set at seven minutes to midnight back in 1947 and has since been reset 23 times.

Although the clock remains in the same position as last year, BAS claims that we are “normalising a very dangerous world.” President and CEO of BAS, Rachel Bronson, explains, “Though unchanged from 2018, this setting should be taken not as a sign of stability but as a stark warning to leaders and citizens around the world,” and “This new abnormal is simply too volatile and too dangerous to accept.”

BAS executive chair and former California governor Jerry Brown claims we are “we’re playing Russian roulette with humanity.”

Per the Bulletin, nuclear weapons and global warming are the two major threats to humankind, as stated by BBC. The group claims that these threats were being “exacerbated” by the “increased use of information warfare to undermine democracy around the world.” This is only the third year the clock has been so close to doomsday. According to BBC, it first reached the position in 1953 after the U.S. and the Soviet Union tested hydrogen bombs.

Whelp, maybe this will be enough motivation to do better in the world.
