Valentine’s Day will be missing a very important element this year. Per InStyle, the iconic Sweethearts candy, which are the sweet mini hearts with messages such as “Kiss Me,” “Ask Me,” “Call Me,” “Miss You,” etc. stamped on them, will not be sold in stores in 2019.

It is shocking because they have become the most popular Valentine’s Day candy, and a staple of the holiday. From middle school crushes to simple gifts between adults, you would see them everywhere on February 14th.

But, New England Confectionery Co., otherwise known as Necco, the creators of the candy, went out of business last year after over 100 years in service and proceeded to be bought out by Spangler Candy Company.

But Spangler took over in September, which gave them just five months to get Sweethearts on the shelves of stores. And that ended up being a hurdle too high to clear.

“There are a lot of manufacturing challenges and unanswered questions at this point, and we want to make sure these brands meet consumer expectations when they re-enter the market,” Kirk Vashaw, Spangler’s chairman, and CEO said.

Now, with the holiday’s most popular candy missing from the market, it opens an opportunity for others to corner the market. And an Illinois-based candy-maker is doing just that, producing their own Conversation Hearts.

However, sales on Conversation Hearts are expected to drop 80% this year, showing just how significant Sweethearts are, and how hard it is to beat the original.

And as disappointed as we all are for Sweethearts missing from store shelves this year, Kirk Vashaw did give us a reason to look forward to the future.

“We are looking forward to announcing the relaunch of Sweethearts for the 2020 Valentine’s Day season.”

However, they are still available online, for those desperate for them. Amazon is selling boxes that start at $9 or you can buy an eight-pack box of candies for $12 on eBay. But again, that just means there is a limited amount available. Read more about it here.
