This August will mark the 15th year since The Princess Diaries 2 was released, making it a while since Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews teamed up. And during this decade-and-a-half, there have been claims from fans for a third film, but nothing was ever in the works.

And with the tragic passing of Gary Marshall, the director of the first two films, back in 2016, any potential plans for a third movie were stalled. But, via Entertainment Tonight, things are starting to heat up in the development for a third movie.

“There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” Anne Hatheway said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”

But of course, the passing of Gary Marshall complicates things a bit because it adds even more pressure to bring justice with the new installment.

“It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it,” Hathaway, 36, continued. “It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

This echoes what Brad Bird, director of The Incredibles, felt when considering a sequel for the iconic animated film. He, along with the rest of the cast, did not want to create an Incredibles 2 if it wasn’t up to par with at least the first one.

It’s better to take your time and get everything right, no matter how long it takes, instead of rushing the flick out, which is what Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves are doing with their upcoming Batman movie.

It’s the sound strategy to go with, and one which I hoped all movies would go with. But, as we have all seen, that’s not always the case, so it’s promising to hear Hathaway’s comments.

Now we have to see if actors and actresses such as Chris Pine and Mandy Moore make a return if the movie ever gets off the ground. Read more about it on Entertainment Tonight here.
