President Trump’s border wall has long been a major topic of discussion. The issue of funding the wall even led to a partial government shutdown.

The wall’s main purpose is to keep out illegal immigrants and eradicate drug trafficking. However, according to CBS News, Border Patrol agents have found at least 230 underground tunnels running from Mexico into Arizona and California since 1990. These underground tunnels are used to smuggle drugs and other illegal goods. As a result, Border Patrol agents must monitor both the activity above ground and below. To create these tunnels, smugglers take advantage of the infrastructure underneath the border.

Kevin Hecht, deputy patrol agent in charge in Nogales, said from inside a storm drain, “This is already in place built by the cities to drain water.”

“What they’re building is tapping into this and they’re building an illicit tunnel,” he continued.

Back in early January, Mexican police found a tunnel that accessed a sewer system that flows into the United States, per CBS News. These tunnels can be extremely narrow and could be a problem for a Border Patrol agent with claustrophobia. And, according to Hecht, training agents to overcome the fear of tight spaces is essential.

“Sometimes we’ve got to strip down because it’s so tight. Gun belt off and gun in the hand and a flashlight in the other … very, very simple,” Hecht said. “They’re smuggling contraband into these pipes … so we need to make that stop, so the point is to find those, remediate the tunnel, fill it with concrete and move on to the next pipe.”
