Ever select a specific playlist or Spotify radio station on Spotify, and while listening, an artist you don’t like, for whatever reason, pops up? And instead of jamming out uninterrupted, you have to pull out your phone and change the song.

Well, according to USA Today, Spotify has rolled out a new “don’t play this artist” feature for their iOS app where you can mute out all songs from the artist(s) of your choice in the Spotify database. Meaning, songs from the said artist will be skipped when listening to a playlist, library, chart list, or radio station.

All you have to do is go the home page of the artist, click on the “…” in the top right and select “Don’t play this artist.”

It’s a simple, yet unique addition to the music app that may have its motivations rooted in something more serious. Many speculate, although Spotify has not confirmed, that this function is in response the #MuteRKelly campaign which began back in 2017.

Just last year, Spotify removed R. Kelly from their promotional and algorithmic playlists- playlists like “New Music Friday,” “Discover Weekly,” “Release Radar,” etc.- because of their “Hate Conduct Policies”- instead of removing his content altogether.

“We don’t censor content because of an artist’s or creator’s behavior, but we want our editorial decisions … to reflect our values,” Spotify said at the time. “When an artist or creator does something that is especially harmful or hateful … it may affect the ways we work with or support that artist or creator.”

And he wasn’t the only exclusion, as rapper XXXTentacion was in the same boat as R. Kelly. Spotify even removed various Alex Jones podcasts because they violated hate speech guidelines.

But around a month later, Spotify was eventually forced to undo their action towards Kelly and XXXTentacion amid the backlash they received.

“We don’t aim to play judge and jury,” their blog read. “We aim to connect artists and fans – and Spotify playlists are a big part of how we do that. Our playlist editors are deeply rooted in their respective cultures, and their decisions focus on what music will positively resonate with their listeners. That can vary greatly from culture to culture, and playlist to playlist. Across all genres, our role is not to regulate artists.”

But, as the #MuteRKelly movement grew stronger, the level of controversy surrounding the troubled artist increased, forcing Spotify’s hand. This new feature is a subtle way of achieving what they attempted last year because the power is in the hands of the listener. However, it will not block out songs in which the artists you choose to avoid are featured in.

And although Spotify has yet to comment on the motivation, the timing is too coincidental for it not to be what everyone believes it is. Read more about it here.
