Last February, Jared Kushner, President Trump’s senior advisor, had his interim-level security clearance downgraded after procedures were revamped, per NBC News. The overhaul took place “following controversy over why former Trump staff secretary Rob Porter had access to the nation’s most sensitive information despite red flags raised during an FBI investigation.”

It meant that Kushner no longer had access to classified information requiring the highest level of clearance. But just a few months later, he was granted full clearance, a decision that is now under investigation, according to Ken Dilanian of NBC News.

“The Committee on Oversight and Reform is launching an in-depth investigation of the security clearance process at the White House and Transition Team in response to grave breaches of national security at the highest levels of the Trump administration,” Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, said in a letter to the White House obtained by NBC News.

Nearly a year ago, NBC News reported that over 130 staff members of the Executive Office did not have permanent security clearances as of November 2017, including Trump’s daughter and advisor Ivanka Trump. And 47 of the 130 were people who reported directly to the president.

Kushner’s clearance, however, was approved as only “top secret” status, according to the Washington Post, meaning he was barred from reviewing some of the government’s closely guarded secrets – secrets that he supposedly should not have access to.

In the letter, Cummings said he is hoping to determine “why the White House and Transition Team appear to have disregarded established procedures for safeguarding classified information” and “the extent to which the nation’s most highly guarded secrets were provided to officials who should not have had access to them.”

Cummings said, “For the past two years, I have sought information with other Committee Members about a series of extremely troubling incidents regarding the security clearances of some of President Trump’s top aides, but the White House has refused to provide the information we requested, often ignoring our requests completely.”
