Baseball’s hot stove has been a slow burn, as the biggest names on the free agent and trade markets have yet to find new homes, and it’s already the end of January.

One of the players still left on the market is Manny Machado, who, alongside Bryce Harper, is viewed in a class of his own this free agency because of his age, talent, and youth.

Machado, 26, is a shortstop/third baseman, and considered is very young for an MLB free agent. And because of his youth, he was expected, also with Bryce Harper, to potentially get north of $300 million, which would be a record.

However, it’s safe to say that the infielder’s market has not been what anyone has expected, let alone matching his expectations.

The New York Yankees have reportedly been his preference, but they are unlikely to meet his financial demands because they do not need him. He is also unlikely to return to his former teams, the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The two favorites to land him are the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies- rebuilding teams with young talent looking to make a splash with their cap flexibility and a need on the left side of the infield. And because of this aggressiveness, they are also two of the favorites to land Bryce Harper.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the White Sox made an eight-year deal to the superstar, but three days later, ESPN’s Buster Olney was told it was a seven-year deal in the neighborhood of $175 million.

The White Sox appear to be locked into Machado over Harper, as they have already offered him a deal, traded for first baseman Yonder Alonso, who happens to be Machado’s brother-in-law, and signed veteran outfielder Jon Jay, who is regarded as a close friend of the 26-year-old.

That all is nice on the surface, but Machado’s priority appears to be going to the highest bidder. So, it’s fair to say that he may have been disappointed by the offer because, while the years are there, the dollar amount wasn’t. And you can blame the slow-developing market for that.

But the Phillies still aren’t out of it, although there hasn’t been any recent steam between the two parties. And from the looks of it, Bryce Harper may be their primary target. But we don’t know for sure because if history has told us, rumors are just that: rumors.

But from the looks of it, Philadelphia and the South Side of Chicago are the most likely landing spots for the 26-year-old infielder. Read more about this here.
