The day after Christmas, President Trump and Melania visited the U.S. troops at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq just west of Baghdad to boost morale and to thank them for protecting our country. However, more people than not are offended that this is his first effort to see the troops.

The New York Post reports that this is his first visit with military members in a war zone since he entered the White House almost two years ago. While he had other opportunities to pay his respects in November to fallen troops in an American WWI cemetery and during Veterans Day to those in Arlington National Cemetery, he said that he was too busy. In an interview with the Associated Press, President Trump states, “I will do that at some point, but I don’t think it’s overly necessary. I’ve been very busy with everything that’s taking place here.” Both George W. Bush and Barrack Obama made trips to Iraq multiple times throughout their presidency.

Looks like President Trump finally made the time and took the long journey to into a dangerous warzone to celebrate Christmas with the troops.

However, this trip to see the troops was not necessarily on the President’s agenda. Trump and his family were actually scheduled to have a 16-day vacation in Mar-a-Lago over the holidays, but President Trump was detained due to issues at work. Since the deal on the Mexican border wall took too long to sort out and a partial government shutdown occurred, a getaway was not feasible for the Trump family.

Despite Trump’s family vacay plan fallout, he made the most of the situation and tried his best to surprise the troops. He, Melania and National Security Adviser John Bolton disappeared the Wednesday after Christmas. Bolton couldn’t be found in the West Wing and President Trump’s Twitter was silent. Trump didn’t even answer questions about his whereabouts.

All of the surprise and joy of the visit was captured by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. She posted the photos on Twitter with the caption, “President Trump and the First Lady traveled to Iraq late on Christmas night to visit with our troops and Senior Military leadership to thank them for their service, their success, and their sacrifice and to wish them a Merry Christmas.”

Regardless if it was overdue, the troops appreciated gesture. Traveling into an active military warzone is no easy feat for a president, and it allowed the soldiers to see that they’re not forgotten but very much loved. What do you think? Should he have visited a lot sooner? Read the full story from The New York Post here.
