The year 2018 had many ups and downs for Selena Gomez. While her music career skyrocketed with hits such as “Back to You” and “Taki Taki,” her mental and physical health suffered. Earlier this past year, Gomez underwent a dangerous kidney transplant that, according to her best friend, Francia Raísa, almost killed her. Raísa told W magazine, “My kidney was very active, and when she turned, she broke an artery. They had to take [Gomez] into emergency surgery and get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep my kidney in place. She could have died.” Luckily, both Raísa and Gomez survived the surgery but not without complications. Gomez’s health started to decline.

In the last week of September, a family member took Gomez to a Los Angeles hospital because she was “despondent and emotional over an alarmingly low white blood cell count in the wake of her kidney transplant.” However, TMZ reports that in October, she was readmitted because “her low blood cell count persisted, and it threw Selena into a downward emotional spiral.”

During the second visit, she suffered a panic attack. A source told People, “She has had a tough few weeks and the panic attack in the hospital was the tipping point.”

Per Cosmopolitan, after her second hospitalization in October, she checked into a psychiatric facility on the East Coast and received BT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), a treatment used for various mental health conditions.

Months later, she appears to be doing much better. Friends Connar Franklin and Bailee Madison posted Instagram pictures of them all together on a ski trip. People reports that Selena is “feeling much better and looking forward to getting back to normalcy. She’s spending time with friends and family.”

Well, we’re just glad she got the help she needed and hopefully, 2019 will bring her better health. Do you think this kind of therapy helped? Read the full story from Cosmopolitan here.
