Calling all avocado lovers! Apparently, if you don’t wash your avocado before eating it… you could be in trouble.

Recently, the FDA announced that federal investigators’ sampling found Listeria monocytogenes on the peels of about one in five avocados. The data is part of a study in which investigators tested 361 avocado skins, 17.73 percent tested positive. They also tested for listeria and salmonella inside 1,615 avocados, but less than one percent tested positive for either.

Looks like the problem is coming from the skin of the avocado, which some believe doesn’t even need to be washed.

Listeriosis symptoms include “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” and in pregnant women, the infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, the FDA said.

When you cut into an avocado without washing it, you can easily spread any dirt and bacteria from the outside of the of the avocado skin to the inside part that is consumed. In light of this new information, the FDA is recommending the public to “thoroughly” wash the avocado skin. To reduce the risk even more, scrub the avocado skin with a produce brush and dry it with a clean paper towel.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and approximately 260 people die. Pregnant women, newborns, adults ages 65 or older and people with weak immune systems are most likely to be affected.

William Hallman, a human ecology professor at Rutgers University told USA Today that very little listeria would be likely transferred from the skin to the flesh of the avocado, but he called the FDA suggestion “good advice.”

“Even though the risk is relatively small, you can reduce it to virtually nonexistent,” Hallman said. “There are many more dangerous things you can do than not wash an avocado, but having said that, the rate at which the FDA found listeria on avocados was a fair amount.”

Looks like eating an avocado without washing the skin is an avoca-don’t. Do you wash your avocados before you eat them? Read more about this on USA Today here.
