Does your marriage involve fights, bickering and lots of defensiveness? If so, don’t sign the divorce papers just yet. New research has shown that as married couples age, they actually become happier.

The study, out of the University of California, Berkeley has shown that as married couples age, they let go of resentments, and show more humor and love for each other. Have a cute (#goals) old couple in mind yet?

Researchers in this study analyzed videotaped conversations between 87 middle-aged and older couples who’d been married for 15 to 35 years, and tracked their emotional interactions over the course of 13 years.

The study showed an increase in positive behaviors, such as cuddling and joking, and a decrease in negative emotions, such as defensiveness and criticism. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Lead study author Robert Levenson explained, “Our findings shed light on one of the greatest paradoxes of late life. Despite experiencing the loss of friends and family, older people in stable marriages are relatively happy and experience low rates of depression and anxiety. Marriage has been good for their mental health.”

Throughout the 13-year study, researchers found that in both middle-aged and older couples, regardless of their satisfaction with the relationship, there was an increase in positive emotional behaviors with age and a decrease in overall negative emotional behaviors.

“Given the links between positive emotion and health, these findings underscore the importance of intimate relationships as people age, and the potential health benefits associated with marriage,” Alice Verstaen, co-author of the study said.

Next time you’re going through a rough patch with your partner, just remember – like a fine wine, it gets better with age.
