Is Biden making a comeback? According to CNN, Joe Biden is leading the polls as the 2018 Democratic Nominee.

On December 14, CNN took a poll for Democratic 2020 nominees and Biden sat at the top with an astounding 30 percent. This is not an uncommon occurrence. For the past 11 months, Biden has not trailed in any national poll. Iowa especially is in his favor, with him leading the polls at 32 percent. While the betting markets only give Biden a 10 percent chance of winning and only give Democrats a 20 percent, candidates leading in contested primaries tend to have a 50 percent chance of winning the overall nomination.

Evident in the polls, Biden is well-known, well-liked, and not to mention, experienced. The data from CNN’s poll shows that 88 percent of Democrats and Independents have an opinion about Joe Biden, compared to the 45 percent who knew Senator Kamala Harris. But those statistics should come as no surprise, considering he has served on the Senate and as Vice President for many years.

This year, the Democrats are voting a little differently. The main focus on this nomination? Finding someone to win against Trump. About 54 to 40 percent of Iowa Democrats believe it’s more important to pick someone who can beat Trump over choosing someone who shares their ideology. Iowa Democrats also want a “seasoned hand” and about 49-to-36 percent of Iowan Democrats believe that’s the key to winning. With these requirements, Biden is the obvious choice. Biden has beaten Trump in every poll and in the double digits.

So, what’s holding Joe back? There are doubts of his ability to beat Trump since Biden ran for office in 1988 and 2008 but didn’t win. However, 2018 is a different time. His popularity in the polls increased from 10% to 30%! CNN reports that other doubts include concerns about him being too old (76), too mainstream in a left moving party and being a white male in a diversifying party.

Polls are not the end-all-be-all, but odds are looking pretty good for Joe Biden. Should he go for it? Read the full story from CNN here.
