Meghan Markle seems born for the runway. Whether she’s in her powerful outfits on ‘Suits’ or posing in her gorgeous wedding dress, she definitely captures attention. That’s why it only seemed fitting that she should make a surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards to award Clare Waight Keller, the British Womenswear Designer of the Year.

Clare Waight Keller is the designer of Meghan’s stunning wedding dress and close friend of the duchess. The dress not only became iconic for its simple elegance, but it also became a historical artifact displayed in the Windsor Castle.

With all the acclaim that Meghan’s dress received, it’s no wonder Clare Waight Keller won the award. But that’s not all she’s done. Keller is the first female artistic director of Givenchy, and according to the New York Times, her work is “marked by a soft-focus, accessibly elegance with a tailored line.”

In a statement by Philippe Fortunato, chief executive of Givenchy, he expresses his excitement for Clare to take over and return Givenchy to its roots.

“I am very excited to see Clare bring her singular sense of elegance and modernity to Givenchy,” he said. “By exploring our maison’s 65-year heritage and the outstanding savoir-faire of its ateliers, I am convinced Clare will help Givenchy reach its full potential.”

Clare Waight Keller’s work has been worn by many celebrities, the most famous being Meghan Markle. Keller is responsible for some of Meghan’s most recognizable looks, including the dress she wore to the British Fashion Awards!

Wearing a black, one-shouldered gown, designed by (you guessed it) Waight Keller, Meghan surprised not only her friend but also the crowds. Accessorized with Pippa Small-designed gold bangles, Tamara Mellon “Karat” sandals and her hair pulled bank in a low bun, Meghan was greeted with deafening cheers from the audience.

Glamour reports that Meghan came out on stage a delivered a sweet and refined speech that perfectly matched her outfit. “It is such an honor to be here celebrating British fashion and British fashion designers in my new home of the U.K.… As all of you in this room know, we have a deep connection to what we wear. Sometimes it’s very personal; sometimes it’s emotional. But for me, this connection is rooted in, really, being able to understand that it’s about supporting and empowering each other, especially as women. When we choose to wear a certain designer, we’re not just a reflection of their creativity and their vision, but we’re also an extension of their values in something of the fabric, so to speak, that is much more meaningful.”

Clare accepted the award with a hug for Meghan and a gushing acceptance speech. “This woman is so amazing. I got to know Meghan on such a personal level. To have someone like that trust you on such a personal moment in their life … I can’t thank you enough because it was the most beautiful moment.”

Whether it’s the woman who designed it or the woman who wears it, there’s no denying that both Clare Waight Keller and Meghan Markle have impeccable style. Read the full story from Glamour here.
