There is a real-life Santa Claus, and he flies United. Peter Shankman is an author, podcast host and businessman with a heart of gold. As a frequent traveler for work, he flies approximately 250,000 to 300,000 miles a year throughout America, Asia and Europe. He accumulates a lot of flyer airline miles with United Airlines through his travels, and for the past four years, has donated them to people who can’t afford to fly home. He is making people’s Christmas dreams come true.

Shankman tells USA Today, “The amount of travel I do gives me a ton of miles so being able to give back this way is the best thing I know how to do with them, and I can only give so many free trips to my parents, and my assistant and her boyfriend.”

“I truly believe that if you’ve had any modicum of success, you have a responsibility to ‘send the elevator back down,’ as it were. Giving away trips home for the holidays to people who might not be able to afford them is the best way I know how to do that. Secondly, it’s a blast to teach my daughter about giving back.”

Santa- I mean Shankman- uses the online website Imgur, a community powered entertainment destination, to nominate who he give his miles to. He asks those unable to travel home to post their stories and the other users vote on the most touching story. Whichever post has the most votes gets a flight back home.

This year alone, he has already awarded six Imgur users trips. The reasons range from seeing loved ones to sending a mother to see her dead brother’s “final resting place.”

Shankman’s charity really demonstrates the spirit of Christmas and touches even the grinch-iest of hearts. USA Today reports that even United Airlines has “pledged to donate 200,000 miles to the charity of Shankman’s choice” because of his selflessness. This really is the gift that keeps on giving.
