The Trump administration recently rolled out a new federal regulation that officially bans bump-fire stocks.

Bump-fire stocks gained nationwide attention last year after a gunman in Las Vegas rigged his weapons with bump-fire stocks before shooting and killing 58 people at an outdoor concert.

According to CNN, the devices make it easier to fire rounds from a semiautomatic weapon by harnessing the gun’s recoil to “bump” the trigger faster. Senior DOJ officials said that those who possess the devices will have 90 days to turn in or destroy them from the official date the rule is published in the federal register.

The Department of Justice amended the regulations of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The new rule determines that bump-fire stocks fall within the prohibition on machine guns by allowing a “shooter of a semiautomatic firearm to initiate a continuous firing cycle with a single pull of the trigger.”

The signing of the new rule by Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker was a “notable move given the string of legal challenges surrounding the constitutionality of his appointment,” according to CNN.

Determining how many gun owners will be affected by this is difficult to uncover, but officials say bump stocks “aren’t widespread, but they are not uncommon.”

President Trump promised to ban bump-fire stocks when he told the National Rifle Association “bump stocks are gone” in October. In October 2017, a spokesperson for the NRA said that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives “should review bump-fire stocks to ensure they comply with federal law,” but also made clear that it opposed the strict gun-control legislation raised by certain members of Congress.
