The Trump administration is losing another member: Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

President Trump recently chose to withdraw 2,000 troops from Syria, but Mattis did not agree with this decision. According to USA Today, Mattis urged retention of U.S. troops in Syria.

In his resignation letter, Mattis pointed out his differences with Trump over the need for alliances. He also told the president that he should choose a different chief for the Defense Department, per USA Today.

Mattis wrote, “Because you have the right to have a secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is time for me to step down from my position.”

Based on a tweet by Trump, there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between the two despite their differences in opinion. He tweeted, “General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!”

According to USA Today, Mattis expressed his disagreement in a response to a tweet in which Trump defended his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria. Trump stated that America should not act as the world’s “policeman.”

“Like you, I have said from the beginning that the armed forces of the United States should not be the policeman of the world,” Mattis wrote. “Instead, we must use all the tools of American power to provide for the common defense, including providing effective leadership to our alliances.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement that he is “sorry to learn” Mattis is leaving.

“I am particularly distressed that he is resigning due to sharp differences with the president on these and other key aspects of America’s global leadership. It is regrettable that the president must now choose a new Secretary of Defense. But I urge him to select a leader who shares Secretary Mattis’s understanding of these vital principals and his total commitment to America’s service members,” McConnell said.
