Despite Kim Jong-un’s publicly displayed desire for denuclearization, new satellite images of North Korea reveal the country has “significantly” expanded a key long-range missile base located in the seclusion of the mountains, according to CNN.

“Satellite images show that the base remains active. Moreover, in the past year North Korea has significantly expanded a nearby facility that appears to be another missile base,” the Middlebury Institute report states.

The images showed that North Korea was building an “extremely large” underground facility in 2017, and that this facility was still under construction in Aug. 2018.

“Construction on the previously unidentified site has continued even after the Singapore Summit,” one of the analysts who identified the site told CNN. “Whatever Kim says about denuclearization, North Korea continues to produce and deploy nuclear armed missiles.”

During the summit between President Trump and Kim Jong-un this summer, Trump declared that the two leaders pledged to build a “lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula” and to “work toward complete denuclearization.”

According to CNN, although Kim is not in violation of any agreement with the US or South Korea by continuing to produce missiles, the declaration of another active North Korean missile base comes at a time when members of the Trump administration are declaring that Pyongyang has not upheld its end of the bargain so far.

When asked about the findings, Pentagon spokesperson Lt. Col. Chris Logan told CNN, “We watch North Korea very closely. We continue to support the diplomatic process. We will not discuss matters of intelligence.”

Hmm…should that make us feel better or worse about the situation?

The discovery of large active missile bases in North Korea could be a cause of concern to some, but what does it really mean? Read more about this on CNN here.
