After a year and a half of managing President Trump with some public drama sprinkled on top, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has resigned as a last-ditch effort to save his and President Trump’s friendship.

“It’s been a great honor to serve my country and the Trump administration, but nothing is more important than the strong bond shared by two longtime friends, not even a job, so rather than jeopardize that deep connection any longer, I have decided to leave my post,” Kelly told reporters.

The Trump administration handled this situation differently than ones in the past, opting for a formal resignation announcement rather than a “fire-by-tweet” maneuver as the president has used to dismiss other high-ranking officials like ex-Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

“They’re trying to put together a dignified way for Kelly to leave,” a formal White House official said before Kelly’s resignation announcement.

In the past few months, Kelly told friends repeatedly that “despite the grueling demands of his job and constant speculation about his relationship with the first family, he serves ‘at the pleasure of the president’ and would never quit on his own,” according to Politico.

Does this mean he was forced to leave?

Kelly, a retired Marine general who joined the White House in 2017, has weathered rumors that the president wants him out for months now, but the rumors recently came to a head as Kelly seemed to come to an agreement with the White House to announce his resignation.

Kelly’s resignation wasn’t a surprise to most, Trump even recently stated, “John Kelly will be leaving – I don’t know if I can say ‘retiring’ but he’s a great guy. John Kelly will be leaving at the end of the year.”

The search to replace Kelly continues. Read more about this on Politico here.
