If you’ve been to a quick-service restaurant that uses iPad cash registers, you know the dilemma. After buying a 10-dollar snack, you’re asked if you want to leave a tip. You could easily press “no tip,” but the awkwardness that follows can leave you feeling uneasy. Leaving a tip seems to be the best option.

A guilty conscience could be the reason why customers are tipping more at companies that use the iPad device for payment purposes. According to Delish, anecdotal evidence and data from companies such as Toast and Square have shown an increase in tips when places move over to this type of payment system. The machines are primarily used for the sake of convenience as people do not carry much cash anymore. However, the employees at locations that use the iPad cash register profit from this system.

The owner of a creperie in Massachusetts told Skift Table that after switching to Toast, a technology that allows customers the option to leave a customized tip while paying, his employees saw tips go from practically nothing to an extra $4 an hour per employee. Toast data showed places that use their service see tips on about 60 percent of credit card orders, compared to less than 30 percent before using it.

The average tip amount for quick-service restaurants using Square is 13.8 percent of the bill, which is close to the 15.9 percent average at full-service restaurants, Delish says.

It seems their tipping technology is effective, so working at one of these places may be the way to go!
