Aside from entertainment, Lady Gaga has been focusing on today’s key issues, particularly mental health and suicide.

In a recent op-ed, Gaga expresses her concern about mental illness being “poorly-funded” and deserving of more attention, empathy and treatment worldwide, according to Today.

The ‘A Star is Born’ (2018) actress is hoping that everyone can come together to “be part of a new movement” to help battle it.

In her essay, she stresses that when it comes to mental health “at present, every nation in the world is a ‘developing country.’” It seems that around the globe, mental illness is still something that many people do not have a grasp on, not to mention enough research of it.

According to Gaga’s column, mental health receives less than one percent of global aid. Moreover, domestic financing to prevent it, promote awareness and provide treatment is “similarly low.”

Along with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization director-general, the co-authored editorial that appeared in The Guardian raises the topic of suicide, observing that it is the second leading cause of death globally among 15-29-year-olds. Gaga and Dr. Ghebreyesus reveal that celebrities, Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, whom have taken their own lives, were mourned publicly with big headlines this year, while the other 800,000 people who kill themselves each year “are all sons or daughters, friends or colleagues, valued members of families and communities.” Similarly, a new trend has revealed that women are particularly vulnerable to suicide.

Gaga has also shared her own struggles with mental illness after being raped when she was 19. Back in 2016 during a visit with TODAY, she opened up about suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder since the attack.

And just last year, Gaga and Prince William shared a video call in which they talked about their own personal battles with mental health and therapy for a mental health campaign.

Most importantly, the essay includes a call to action. “We can no longer afford to be silenced by stigma or stymied by misguided ideas that portray these conditions as a matter of weakness or moral failing,” Gaga and Dr. Ghebreyesus write. “Research shows there is a fourfold return on investment for every dollar spent on treating depression and anxiety.”

They conclude that it will take both individuals and governments to begin treating mental illness with the gravity it is due.

Gaga co-authors an essay on mental health which includes a call for action. Are you on the same page as her? Read more about this story on Today here.
