Rihanna, world famous pop singer, was offered the chance to perform at the Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show in Atlanta, Georgia. With over 100,000 fans in attendance, it’s an opportunity that most artists would die for. However, she promptly rejected it. Why? According to Bleacher Report, Rihanna “supports Colin Kaepernick.” After the 2016 NFL kneeling incident, a lot of athletes and celebrities (such as Rihanna and Amy Schumer) are expressing their support for the ex-49ers Quarterback. Has the “Kaepernick Effect” gone on too far?

In the 2016 NFL preseason and regular-season games, Colin Kaepernick protested the police shootings of African-Americans by sitting during the National Anthem. According to CNN, Kaepernick states that he cannot “show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” He later switched from sitting to kneeling during the National Anthem “to show more respect for men and women who fight for the country.” Kaepernick was joined by a multitude of players not only from his own team but also other NFL teams and sports. This protest received a lot of backlash from the fans who paid to see the game but instead saw a political protest.

What started out as a peaceful protest turned into the end of Kaepernick’s football career. At the beginning of 2017, Kaepernick became a free agent and no team offered him a contract. By October 2017, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the league team owners for keeping him from getting signed.

Many organizations support Kaepernick and do not believe that the NFL should be punishing him. While Kaepernick has not been able to play football, he has received several awards recognizing his work with social justice, such as the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience and GQ’s Citizen of the Year (to name a few). Kaepernick has also become the face of Nike’s “Just Do It” campaign for 2018.

In addition to organizations, celebrities are also showing Kaepernick support by either continuing to kneel or refusing to associate with the NFL, like Rihanna. While there are stars who disapprove of NFL’s treatment to Kaepernick, some artists still dream of performing at the Super Bowl. After Rihanna refused to perform, the NFL asked Maroon 5 and they happily accepted. Cardi B is even rumored to potentially perform her verse in their song “A Girl Like You.” How do you feel about the “Kaepernick Effect?” Has it gone too far?
