“The LGBTQ rights movement was born in NYC. Today, we’re making history again in the fight for dignity and respect,” Mayor Bill de Blasio, @NYCMayor, shared on Twitter, supporting the LGBTQ movement.

History has indeed been made.

The Mayor has signed a bill, which for the first time adds a third gender category on birth certificates issued in New York City, according to CBS New York.

This new non-binary identity category is known as X and is for those people who don’t consider their gender to be male or female.

Now, a letter from a physician or an affidavit by a licensed health care provider will no longer be needed. Residents can submit their own document requesting a change in gender identity.

With overwhelming support for his state, de Blasio stated, “New Yorkers should be free to tell their government who they are, not the other way around.”

He embraced the fact that the “new legislation will empower all New Yorkers – especially our transgender and gender non-binary residents – to have birth certificates that better reflect their identity, and it furthers the City’s commitment to defending the rights of our LGBTQ community.”

First Lady Chirlane McCray also added that the people of their state will be able to have their birth certificates reflect and affirm their lived reality. Moreover, McCray revealed that, “We will not stop there— we strive to extend that dignity to every aspect of life. We will stand strong against any attempt to deny members of the LGBTQ community the respect or safety they deserve as fellow human beings.”

Speaker Corey Johnson expressed his opinion saying that, “New York is sending a clear message to people who are transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary that we are here for you. This law will help those friends, neighbors and colleagues better self-identify on their birth certificates, a document that’s so important in everyday life.”

The city’s overwhelming support for the new bill leaves many to wonder whether this will be adopted by other states and how it will all play out.

By having a third category on birth certificates, the Mayor is strongminded on respecting all New Yorkers and “giving people the freedom of self-determination and self-expression.”

Prior to 2014, New Yorkers who wanted to change the gender on their birth certificates were required to undergo gender confirmation surgery beforehand.
