Brett Kavanaugh who was just sworn in as the new Supreme Court Justice to replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, is wasting no time as he goes straight to work in his new role. Fulfilling a promise, he made from his confirmation hearing, Kavanaugh has become the first high court justice to hire all women as his law clerks, according to the New York Post.

Kavanaugh who has already started researching upcoming cases, was seen huddling with his four female law clerks in chambers. “The women include a current clerk, Kim Jackson, who graduated from Yale in 2017; Megan Lacy, who had been part of the team working on his nomination at the White House and served previously as counsel to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley; Shannon Grammell, who clerked for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson on the 4th Circuit; and Sara Nommensen, who worked in the Department of Justice and is a former student of Kavanaugh’s at Harvard Law School,” according to CNN.

Kavanaugh was confirmed in a 50-48 Senate vote, making it the closest for a winning nominee since 1881, the NY Post reports.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination has become the most politicized hearing in modern times. Since his nomination, many have protested against the decision, after he was accused of sexual assault brought by Christine Blasey Ford. His nomination was put on hold, before he was officially confirmed in the Senate vote. Protestors stormed the Supreme Court and protested his official swearing, which as a result, the ceremony had to be held privately.

Kavanaugh will sit on the far-right side of the bench — the seat reserved for the junior-most justice. Kagan, who hired him to teach at Harvard Law when she served as dean, sits next to Kavanaugh, the NY Post stated.

Now in a bold new move that has never been done before, Kavanaugh decided to hire majority of women, after reading about the inequality between men and women hired for prestigious clerkships, he said during his Senate confirmations hearings.

“In my time on the bench, no federal judge — not a single one in the country — has sent more women law clerks to clerk on the Supreme Court than I have,” Kavanaugh said during his Senate hearing, adding: “If confirmed, I’ll be the first justice in the history of the Supreme Court to have a group of all-women law clerks. That is who I am.”

In fact, up until the 1940’s, no justice had ever hired either a female or black law clerk, according to the New York Times.

In a time which many have referred to as the “year of the women,” many continue fighting for women’s rights. While many are still coming to terms with the fact that Kavanaugh was still nominated despite the allegation during the #MeToo era, it seems something positive is coming out of it so far.

Kavanaugh had blamed Democrats for the allegations calling it a smear campaign to ruin his reputation. Trump who defended him, called it a “hoax” created by the Democrats. While his reputation may be tarnished, many wonder if whether his first move to hire all women, can help him gain back his reputation. Given the allegations, it may take time if anything. However, the move is a smart one. Read the full story from the New York Post here.
