Celebrities have always been known to come forward endorsing and expressing what political side they’re on. It has practically become a trend for celebrities to speak out more than ever. Many have publicly become involved in protests and joining politicians in political campaigns. Some have even gone on to get arrested in support of a protest they truly believe in. Although, even in a time when many celebrities are speaking out, not all celebrities have publicly spoken out about politics, because the risk can cause them a loss in supporters, fans, and respect. Many have been known to never speak out politically, because the risk is far greater for them to do so, causing many who wish they would, feeling frustrated.

The power of the celebrity has long been known and many have slammed celebrities who have not used their power to cause positive changes and help influence people for the greater good of humanity. Although, one can argue, just what would constitute the greater good, when the nation is full of people with different opinions. Which is often why so many have chosen to stay mum on it all.

Taylor Swift is one celebrity who has long kept quiet about her political views. Many often assumed the Tennessee native was a Republican, given the state has a high Republican party affiliation, since the state has not voted a Democratic presidential nominee since 1996.

In a recent Instagram post, she shocked many of her devoted fans when she stated that she had previously been reluctant to publicly voice her political opinions, but the events that have occurred in the past two years have cause her to feel differently. In the lengthy post, she stated that she will be voting in the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, endorsing two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee. She credits her #MeToo experience as one of the reasons that has thrown her to support the candidates.

“I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” she said.

Swift goes on to advise people to educate themselves and vote for candidates that most closely represents their values, while acknowledging that most of us never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue. Swift never hints that anyone should vote the same as her but to vote for someone who you want because we “have the right and privilege” as Americans. Before she ends her post, she reminds people to register to vote, a move that resulted in a massive voter registration spike, according to the New York Times. That is what you call the power of the celebrity.

Kanye West who is often known to be spirited and outspoken, has long declared he supports Trump. He’s been calling Trump a genius for a while and has been seen wearing his “Make America Great Again” hat, which he said makes “him feel like Superman.” A move that has long drawn controversy for his vocal support of President Trump.

During an appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” West went on a rant about President Trump as “SNL” went off the air. The video was captured by cast member, Chris Rock, who posted the video on Instagram stories. Days later, West visited Trump in the oval office at the White House to share some of his ideas, including suggesting that the “stop-and-frisk” policies that Trump wants implemented, is a bad idea. He goes on to say that “the solution to police brutality is love,” and believes we need to “stop worrying about the future. We only have today.”

Both artists have been catching heat for their political stances, on both sides of the spectrum, causing them both to gain and lose supporters, according to CNN. If you recall, both artists were up against each other, after their devoted fans took side back in 2009, when West infamously hijacked the microphone from Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. The feud erupted into more bad blood in 2016, after a dispute on whether West cleared song lyrics about Swift with her prior to releasing the song. This led to Swift denying he had, which then led to Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian, posting the video of the phone call between the two artists discussing West’s plans. A move that for the first time, made Swift come off as a liar, even though the call and the story can be questionable on both sides.

The feud between them has died down a bit from an era when being #TeamTay or #TeamYe was a choice. Fast forward and now with both artists being outspoken, people are pinning them up against each other again, but this time it isn’t about their music, but their political stances. This further proves how divided our country continues to be.

With the spike in voter registration, it will be interesting to see where this end, and if it will roll all the way over onto the polls. Remember when music and politics didn’t intertwine? Read the full story from CNN here.
