As the First Lady, Melania Trump has made it her goal to stop cyberbullying. To Melania, the desire to stop cyberbullying comes from a personal place.

“I could say I’m the most bullied person in the world,” she told ABC News when asked what made her want to tackle the issue of cyberbullying.

When asked if she really thinks she’s the most bullied person in the world, she responded, “One of them, if you really see what people are saying about me.”

Melania has faced her fair share of cyberbullying after being thrust into the spotlight. After taking a look on her social media pages, it is clear to see a prevalent presence of hateful comments and threats towards her.

Melania has launched the “Be Best” campaign as her initiative to end cyberbullying. According the White House website, “The mission of BE BEST is to focus on some of the major issues facing children today, with the goal of encouraging children to BE BEST in their individual paths, while also teaching them the importance of social, emotional, and physical health. BE BEST will concentrate on three main pillars: well-being, social media use, and opioid abuse.”

Melania’s goal to stop cyberbullying comes at a time when it is heavily prevalent in the culture of social media. According to bullyingstatistics.org, more than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyberthreats online, and over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online with the same number reporting to have engaged in cyberbullying.

The First Lady has made cyberbullying a huge part of her platform, pledging to fight it when campaigning for her husband President Trump during the 2016 campaign.

“We need to educate the children of social-emotional behavior, so when they grow up, they know how to deal with those issues,” Melania said. “That’s very important.”

Melania believes that in order to effect a positive change in children who may engage in cyberbullying, they need to be both seen and heard.

“It is our responsibility as adults to educate and reinforce to them that when they are using their voices – whether verbally or online – they must choose their words wisely and speak with respect and compassion,” Melania said via WhiteHouse.gov.
