Is Trump having second thoughts about climate change?

The president has long been skeptical about global warming and climate change, and even suggested it was all a hoax “created by and for the Chinese” to make the US uncompetitive.

Now, the Trump administration has made a startling assumption, in a released 500-page environmental impact statement, according to the New York Post. Deep in the statement, the Trump Administration predicts that Earth will be seven degrees warmer by 2100.

Scientists say the effects would be catastrophic – oceans would become increasingly acidic, causing coral reefs to dissolve. Increasing flooding coastal cities that may leave parts of Manhattan and Miami underwater, will occur. Not to mention, making extreme heat waves more constant, and leaving many areas unbearable to live in.

Sadly, the analysis comes as a way to warn us and lead us to believe that our fate is already sealed, and nothing can really be done now. In the drafted statement issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the administration did not call to cut greenhouse emissions to avoid any changes, but rather suggest the opposite. The statement rather justifies Trump’s decision to freeze fuel-efficiency standards for cars and light trucks built after 2020. The proposal acknowledges that doing so would increase gas emission but say that the impact would not be enough to do further damage, to something that may already be too late.

Not everyone is happy with the released statement and are upset that the Trump administration has not revealed any major plans to help the situation. “The amazing thing they’re saying is human activities are going to lead to this rise of carbon dioxide that is disastrous for the environment and society. And then they’re saying they’re not going to do anything about it,” Michael MacCracken, who served as a senior scientist at the US Global Change Research Program between 1993 and 2002.

To avoid the devastating and disastrous scenario, the world will have to make huge cuts in carbon emissions, the analysis said. In doing so, “substantial increases in technology innovation and adoption compared to today’s levels and would require the economy and the vehicle fleet to move away from the use of fossil fuels, which is not currently technologically feasible or economically feasible,” the analysis says.

The Trump administration withdrew in June 2017 from the Paris Climate agreement and has since then pushed to dismantle about a dozen major rules aimed to control climate change, that were also intended to save companies money. The administration’s proposal is doing the opposite and trying to give new life to coal plants and allow oil and gas operations, which would release more methane to the atmosphere. This would lead to 8 billion tons of additional carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, in this century, according to the analysis.

World leaders had pledged to keep the world from warming more than two degrees, reducing greenhouse gases, and keeping the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in the agreed 2015 Paris Climate agreement. However, the agreement has only led with modest climate-change promises and are falling short. Scientists predict a four-degree Celsius rise by the century’s end will happen if countries don’t take more meaningful actions.

This may lead many to believe that regardless if Trump decided to withdraw from the Paris Climate agreement or not, we would still be at this point. However, if the planet is headed to a catastrophic future, Trump may only be harming it. His failure to do anything, including things like slapping tariffs on imports of solar panels, and frankly doing the opposite to help, will seemingly only be more catastrophic in the end.

Trump may not be having second thoughts just yet, but his administration is at least acknowledging where the planet is heading but has offered no solutions at the moment. Read the full story from the New York Post here.
