According to Dictionary.com, the term swagger means to “walk or behave in a very confident and typically arrogant or aggressive way.” The word “swag,” short for “swagger,” became a popular slang word in 2011 with many hip-hop artists using it in their songs. Urban dictionary describes it as “the new generation’s alternative word for ‘cool.’”
The trend of the younger generation using the word “swag” has, for the most part, died off since its peak in 2011-2012. So, when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted an Instagram photo with the seal “Department of Swagger,” many people who commented on this photo found it to be pretty interesting.
After replacing former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Pompeo’s goal was to bring “swagger” back to the State Department. According to Business Insider, Tillerson was “frequently criticized” for the way he handled the agency. President Trump ended up firing Tillerson in a tweet.
Shortly after the first photo Pompeo posted, he posted another with a collage of Shakespeare, Gen. Patton, and himself, adding the caption, “Shakespeare was the first to use ‘swagger.’ Gen. Patton has his swagger stick. At @statedept, we’ve got some #swagger too. It’s our confidence in America’s values.”
During a town hall meeting in May, Pompeo explained his idea of swagger. “Swagger is not arrogance, it is not boastfulness, it is not ego. No, swagger is confidence, in one’s self in one’s ideas. In our case, it is America’s essential rightness. And it is aggressiveness born of the righteous knowledge that our cause is just, special, and built upon America’s core principles.”
