NFL National Anthem Protests Still Strong

It’s preseason game time and NFL players are not ready to give up their efforts in protesting racial inequality anytime soon.

On Thursday during the National Anthem, several players took a knee, raised a fist or were not present on the field as the league’s first full week preseason contests began. According to a source, the league suspended the new policy that was supposed to stop such demonstrations.

The protests have been reoccurring since 2016, when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the anthem in effort to draw attention to racial injustice.

And this time, as the exact fate of the new policy remains unclear, Eagles captain Malcolm Jenkins and cornerback De’Vante Bausby raised their fists during the song in Philadelphia, while Dolphins wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson knelt during the anthem ahead of their game in Miami. Several Jaguars, Jalen Ramsey, Telvin Smith, Leonard Fournette and T.J. Yeldon were not on the field as the anthem played ahead of their game against the New Orleans Saints in Jacksonville.

Again, President Trump took to Twitter to express his discontent with the way the players were acting, only this time saying that “most of them” are not even able to “define” what they are outraged about. To which, former NFL wide receiver Donté Stallworth, replied that the players choosing to protest, clearly know why they are doing it.

Moreover, the NFL said that it won’t punish the players who took part in Thursday’s protests, as they are still figuring out the policy on anthem conduct. It must reach an agreement with the NFL Players Association first.

Protest or no protest, the NFL has shelved the anti-protest policy. Will it come back? 56% of people are sure no one will do anything, while 44% think the NFL will put a stop to them. Read the story in depth on CNN here.
