Miss USA Has Been Crowned

Say hello to our new Miss USA! Miss Nebraska, Sarah Rose Summers, won the popular competition as a fan favorite. Her name fits her new part- it literally sounds like sunshine. The competition was held at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport- Bossier, Louisiana, where Summers competed against 50 other women.

The 23-year-old beauty graduated from Texas Christian University, and is the very first woman from Nebraska to win the title of Miss USA. She began her pageantry career when she was ten years old, and has won numerous competitions which include Miss Nebraska Teen USA 2012, Miss Nebraska USA 2018, and now, Miss USA 2018. She will go on to represent the USA at the Miss Universe Pageant a few months from now.

How do the contestants make themselves stand out? For Summers, many people believe her meaningful answers to the Q&A section made her a top contender.

One of the questions asked her to imagine herself on the way to a march where someone hands her a blank sign and a marker. She was asked to state what she would write on the sign and why. Summers answered, “I say speak your voice. I don’t know what march we’re on our way to in this hypothetical situation, but no matter where you’re going, whatever type of march it is, you’re obviously on your way to that march because you care about that cause so go speak to people.”

After the Q&A sections, contestants compete in the controversial swimsuit competition and then change into their evening gowns. These ladies are the last to participate in the swimsuit competition, which will no longer be a part of the show. The chairwoman of Miss America’s board of directors, Gretchen Carlson, announced on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ that they “will no longer judge candidates on their outward physical appearance.”

Another significant change in this year’s competition was an all- female selection committee that comprised of business leaders, industry experts and entrepreneurs.
