President Trump Raises Eyebrows with Russia Again

President Trump raised eyebrows as he called for Russia to be reinstated into the group of the world’s largest economies meeting. Trump, who is headed to the G-7 summit in Quebec, insists that Russia be let back in after they were expelled in 2014. The G-7 is short for “Group of seven,” which include – the U.S., France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and Britain. The meeting is being held to discuss his decision to impose tariffs on imports from Canada and the European Union. Trump will be facing his allies, which include, French President Emanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As of recently, they have all engaged in a war of words with each other.

“Now, I love our country. I have been Russia’s worst nightmare,” Trump said. “But with that being said, Russia should be in this meeting. Why are we having a meeting without Russia being in the meeting?”

The summit, which was known as the G-8 up until 2014, included Russia. Trump’s support for suggesting that Russia be reinstated adds fuel to the suspicion that Russia meddled in the election to support his campaign. It leaves many with questions.

“I would recommend — and it’s up to them, but Russia should be in the meeting, it should be a part of it. You know, whether you like it or not, and it may not be politically correct, but we have a world to run,” Trump told reporters. “And in the G-7, which used to be the G-8, they threw Russia out. They should let Russia come back in. Because we should have Russia at the negotiating table,” Trump said.

Russia was banned from the summit meeting after Flight MH-17 was shot down in 2014, over the eastern Ukraine. The jet killed all 298 people on board when it was destroyed by a Russian missile, that was supplied by a specific military unit in Southern Russia, according to Politico.  Putin continues to deny that Russia was involved in any way.
