The controversial relocation of the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem brought a wide array of opinions and outrage from Palestinians who claim East Jerusalem as their capital. Trump made a promise in December that he would officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and he made true on that promise with this move.
The New York Post reports that Trump said, “Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital. Yet for many years we failed to acknowledge the obvious, the plain reality that Israel’s capital is Jerusalem.”
Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and shouted about redeeming Palestine outside the new embassy. Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump’s husband, stated that the protesters were part of the problem. He continued by saying that the United States can be trusted and that the country will stand with friends and allies.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, praised Trump and stated, “What a glorious day. Remember this moment! President Trump, by recognizing history, you have made history. All of us are deeply moved. All of us are deeply grateful.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer celebrated Trump’s decision on the move, stating that he had sponsored legislation to try and accomplish the move two decades ago. Do you agree with Trump’s decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem? 86% of people voted they agree with Trump’s choice, while 14% disagreed. Read more about this story on The New York Post here.
